In May 2012, Haughton Design was approached by Harmill to assist with the design and development of a bespoke mobile piece of industrial equipment required to work effectively within the pressured confines of the London Underground Network. The new kit was to replace reinforced concrete tunnel rings along the Jubilee Line - this equipment was to be used in very difficult conditions, under very tight time and safety constraints – it was vital to be robust and very reliable. Haughton Design had the specific mechanical design and yellow goods experience to understand the complexity of the project, and successfully designed the disc cutting and pecking arm which has now been running for the last two years. It has performed very effectively and reliably during evenings, weekends and bank holidays without impacting the regular services of the underground line.
The project is now being recognised at the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards 2014, for reducing site set up and demobilisation times whilst maximising effective working during the short engineering maintenance window, and giving TfL the confidence to approve this method as the means to reline tunnel sections for the future. Haughton Design’s Managing Director, David Mills says “This was a very challenging project for everyone involved, I am extremely proud that our input has been so successful and that Harmill will be recognised for the superb job that they do, I hope we can help them again, they are a great company to work with.”
