This week saw Haughton Design kick-off The Black Country UTC’s Engineering Design module. Year 10 students who were set a demanding challenge by Managing Director, David Mills. Students had to generate a concept for a new, or improved, non-electrical product which was used on a daily basis. This saw students work as a team to generate a range of novel products including a hair brush with interchangeable heads, a pen with an inbuilt perfume dispenser and the winning project; a toothbrush with integrated toothpaste. Iain Cotterill,  Christopher Davis, Thomas Rivers, Rhianne Crutchle and Mickayla Stott made up the winning team. They showed a firm grasp of the design development process, they brainstormed a range of innovative ideas, created a unique product, and then detailed how the product would mechanically function in the space of two hours.  Support will continue throughout the module as Haughton Design will regularly visit the UTC, two other design challenges which will be revealed to the students throughout the term. The final challenge will see students competing for a work placement with Haughton Design, providing the opportunity to see how an award winning design engineering consultancy operates.
